Custom website design pricing: How much should it cost?

• Discovery, strategy planning, research and consulting: We recommend a minimum of 20 hours for this stage of the process, but you can go with more or fewer hours, depending on your budget. This should include time to get to know your business and industry, plan your site conversion and engagement goals, site architecture, sales strategy and more. For top tier talent/agency expect to pay $150-$250 per hour.
• Design: At ImageWorks we spend a minimum of 50 hours designing pages, usability optimization, site architecture, menu design, font styles, calls-to-action, interactive features, revisions, navigation and everything else that contributes to your brand identity. Plan on $3,500-$10,000 on average depending on which firm you choose and the strength of their team and portfolio. (Ask about our budget plan for simpler web projects!)
• Development and testing: Implementing your site into a solid content management system (CMS) such as Drupal, Joomla or even WordPress and coding all your style sheets, graphics, interactive elements, animations, buttons, adds, blog and additional site elements take a lot of time. Browser testing alone can take over a week with 4 main browsers and multiple versions of each. Oy! This is why reputable companies will tell you it takes at least 30 days just to code a custom site. For cost purposes to code 5 pages as a benchmark is around $2,500-$5,000 CMS implementation and theme building. Additional pages that need to be implemented into the site navigation, menu, CMS and tested can range from $200-$600 per page depending complexity and each firm’s pricing structure. • Ongoing Marketing: Although not an actual part of the web design process, it is very important to consider what you are going to do AFTER you site is built. Why build a beautiful house without a driveway? You need your customer to find your and also to be actively nurtured to build value and trust.
